Citroën BASALT doesn't take safety for "granite"

Update (13 August 2024): the rating for the base Basalt has been dropped until further notice, as there is conflicting information on Citroën's website about the availability of a three-point seatbelt on the Basalt 'You' PureTech 82 MT

Original article:

Variant details of the midsize Citroën BASALT have been released today, and Gobar NCRAP takes a look at its safety equipment.

The BASALT coupé SUV is the third model in Stellantis' C-Cubed project, which has been notorious for its lack of safety features, with zero-star safety ratings from multiple independent consumer crash test programmes around the world. This changes with the launch of the BASALT, which sports a number of improvements over its siblings.

The standard-specification Basalt 'You' features three-point seatbelts with reminders in all seats, electronic stability control, front, side and curtain airbags, and ISOFIX anchorages compatible even with i-Size approved child restraints. Gobar NCRAP gives it a 'Recommended'.

Other variants also feature a tyre deflation warning, and also earn a 'Recommended'.

Disappointingly, the seatbelt reminders activate even their audio signal if the seatbelt in an unoccupied rear seat is unfastened. Anecdotal evidence suggests that this kind of a system is often so annoying that it discourages belt use.

Stellantis have also announced changes to the C3, ë-C3 and C3 Aircross, but their webpages and brochures have not been updated, until which they will continue with their existing 'Not Recommended' ratings.
