Hyundai, Stellantis Improve but Mahindra Misses an Opportunity

ree

Today, Gobar NCRAP releases updated safety feature lists for midsize SUVS, large three-rows and large SUVs following changes to four models for the 2024 model year.

Two midsize SUVs gain more safety equipment for 2024 - the refreshed Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra XUV400. The Creta now features an optional blind spot camera and warning lamp, and a suite of safety assist technologies like its twin the Kia Seltos updated similarly earlier last year. The Creta is now a 'Best Pick' with optional equipment fitted, while the standard variant continues to be rated 'Recommended'. The updated Creta is also fitted with a lap pretensioner for the driver's safety belt, likely in anticipation of kneemapping requirements for Bharat NCAP consumer tests.

Mahindra's electric XUV400 also makes improvements, with the new 'Pro' versions for 2024 fitted with three-point safety belts in all seats and i-Size compatible rear seats. However, the XUV400 still does not have reminders for the rear safety belts, a surprise since it is a derivative of the XUV300, which had them for a brief phase after its launch in 2020.

Unfortunately, this ambition does not extend to the larger XUV700, which continues with largely the same safety equipment despite a refresh in other areas. Although the introduction of captain-seat variants means some variants have three-point safety belts for all seats, most variants still lack this feature and more. As before, the XUV700 continues with a 'Fair' with optional equipment and 'Not Recommended' otherwise, let down by poor rear seat safety.

Faring better is the 2024 Jeep Compass, updated with rear seat safety features like three-point safety belts and reminders. The 2024 Compass rates 'Recommended', compared to its predecessor which did not even manage a 'Fair'. Meanwhile, Stellantis have also confirmed more safety updates for more affordable models sold under the Citroën brand.
