Today, Gobar NCRAP issues a rating for the safety equipment on the Nissan X-Trail, a large, imported three-row SUV that's likely to have a price tag to match. The result? An underwhelming 'Fair', the second-lowest rating.
Nissan launched the X-Trail last week and it has been praised for its respectable technology and high-tech engine. Nissan will import a limited number of X-Trails without homologation, meaning it won't have to meet India's April 2025 deadline for rear seatbelt reminders, and Nissan unfortunately have taken advantage of that. To its credit, the X-Trail offers some very advanced crash protection equipment, like a centre airbag between the front seats. The X-Trail is also compatible with i-Size child restraints.
But the X-Trail's curtain airbags don't extend to the third row, and it is imported without most active safety equipment from the global car. That includes not only somewhat controversial technologies like automatic emergency braking and lane support, but even useful ones like blind spot detection that's found on much older rivals like the 5 year-old Citroën C5 Aircross.
Customers can find locally made products that have much more comprehensive lists of safety equipment overall.
