Today, Gobar NCRAP releases a new set of ratings for three new cars - the Tata Punch.ev and the 2024 Tata Tiago and Tigor.
Tata's new attempt at electric mobility, the Punch.ev electric subcompact SUV, has been highly praised by journalists over the last week for its feature list. Fortunately, this also extends to its safety, with a host of active and passive safety improvements over the internal combustion version, like electronic stability control, reminders for the rear safety belts, compatibility with i-Size child restraints, three-point safety belts for all seats, side and curtain airbags, and an optional blind spot camera. While the internal combustion Punch continues to be rated 'Not Recommended', the Punch.ev gains a dual rating - 'Recommended' for the standard version, and the highest 'Best Pick' for the optional version with a blind spot camera.
Improvements also come from Tata's affordable Tiago city car and Tigor compact sedan. While both cars still fall behind the latest in safety, missing out on highly demanded safety features like electronic stability control and side and curtain airbags, the 2024 versions bring respectable improvements in rear seat safety, now featuring ISOFIX anchorages, and three-point safety belts with reminders for all rear seats. Both cars are now upgraded to ratings of 'Fair'.
In other related news, this week marked the end of the four-year validity [source] of the 2020-stamped Global NCAP consumer-test ratings for both cars. Tata must stop including the expired rating on the cars' brochures and webpages.
Gobar NCRAP also intended to update midsize SUV ratings following safety updates to the Mahindra XUV400 PRO and Hyundai Creta, but release is suspended until it becomes clear if the former has reminders for the rear safety belts. Similarly, large SUV ratings remain stalled until more information is available about rear-seat restraints on 7-seat versions of the 2024 Mahindra XUV700. Owners of these cars who are willing to provide the missing information are kindly requested to write to theyawningchihuahua@gmail.com.
