Today, Gobar NCRAP releases updated safety comparisons for the second quarter of 2024, hot on the heels of safety specification updates to three Honda models -- the Elevate midsize SUV, City midsize sedan, and Amaze compact sedan.
The recently launched Honda ELEVATE midsize SUV has found favour with Indian customers in a crowded segment, but lagged considerably behind rivals in rear-seat safety, earning Gobar NCRAP's disapproval soon after its launch last September. Now, Honda have taken note of consumer expectations and updated the SUV with improved rear seat restraints like three-point safety belts with reminders and head restraints for all rear seats, and side and curtain airbags across the range. Barring the lack of a tyre pressure monitor and an independent consumer crash test rating (for now), the Honda ELEVATE has all expected of a modern car in the way of safety, and the ZX variant equipped with the Honda Sensing camera-based safety assist suite earns a 'Best Pick'. Lower variants without this package earn a 'Recommended'.
Similarly, the Honda CITY midsize sedan, and the petrol-electric hybrid Honda CITY e:HEV now get curtain airbags across the range and reminders for the rear safety belts. Variants without the Honda LaneWatch blind spot camera earn a 'Recommended', the ZX is a 'Best Pick'.
Lagging far behind on safety is the Honda AMAZE compact sedan, popular among fleets and private consumers alike. The Amaze has not kept up with the market's progress on safety, with little other than regulatory compliance, ISOFIX anchorages and an expired consumer-test rating. Despite adding reminders for the rear safety belts for 2024, the Amaze sticks with its 'Not Recommended' rating, and is likely to continue to do so at least until a new generation arrives later this year.
Some updates were pending before April (Q1 2024) and are featured on Gobar NCRAP Used. Particularly:
The recently launched MG ZS EV Excite Pro does not have a head restraint in the rear centre seat
The Tata PUNCH and Tata ALTROZ now have electonic stability control across the range
