Consumer crash test ratings for adult crash protection have become popular in India, but child protection ratings issued for new cars by Global NCAP and BNCAP appear poorly understood at large, beyond headlines.

Parents must know that these ratings are valid only for a combination of the car and a pair of child restraints selected by its manufacturer — one each for an 18 month-old infant ("Group 0+") and a 3 year-old child ("Group I").

Global NCAP, for example, have shown that the child restraint selected and how it is installed matters. There have been multiple instances where the same car with different child restraints, or the same child restraint in different cars, has shown a dramatic difference in the protection of children in dynamic crash testing.

To help new parents easily find the recommended child restraints for cars they might be shopping for, Gobar NCRAP is affixing information about recommended child restraints to the new car evaluations on its website. Where available, information from consumer tests and vehicle manuals has been considered, the former assuming priority in conflicts.

To find child restraint information, simply visit the 'Safe Behaviour' section of Gobar NCRAP's new car evaluations.
