Today, Gobar NCRAP publishes the first ratings for three premium SUVs - the Hyundai Tucson, BYD ATTO 3 and Volkswagen Tiguan. All variants of all three cars have achieved the maximum rating of 'Best Pick'.
The Volkswagen Tiguan (not to be confused with the midsize Taigun) has recently been updated for the 2023 model year and now features rear safety belt reminders. In typical Volkswagen fashion, the Tiguan's age does not show in its safety, and it achieves a 'Best Pick'.
Good results are achieved by the latest generation of Hyundai Tucson, also recently updated with safety belt reminders for the rear seats. The Tucson carries a dual rating - one each for variants without Hyundai's SmartSense safety assist suite and one for those with. Both ratings are a very robust 'Best Pick'.
But the star of the show is undoubtedly the BYD ATTO 3. The electric SUV not only achieves a 'Best Pick', but checks every single box and achieves the best possible status of 'GOOD+' in every area of assessment. The ATTO 3 is the first car assessed to feature a clever centre airbag between the front-seat occupants, to reduce interaction between their heads in side impacts and limit excursion of the driver's head when struck on the passenger side.
