The Fortuner's owner's manual lists a different types of rear seatbelt reminder system depending on the market. Gobar NCRAP has inspected media reviews of the Fortuner NeoDrive launched in India in June 2025 to determine what type is fitted to Indian units which have had rear seatbelt reminders since June 2025.
The following excerpt is from the Fortuner's owners' manual:
"Rear passengers’ seat belt reminder lights (warning buzzer)*4 (if equipped)
Warn the rear passengers to fasten their seat belts
Fasten the seat belt.
*4: Except models for model code destination W: The rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the rear passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the seat belt is unfastened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time, after the seat belt is fastened and unfastened and the vehicle reaches a certain speed.
Models for model code destination W (type A): The rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the rear passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the seat belt is unfastened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time, after the seat belt is fastened and unfastened and the vehicle reaches a certain speed.
Models for model code destination W (type B): The rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the rear passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the seat belt is unfastened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time after the vehicle reaches a certain speed."
Gobar NCRAP has made the following observations and conclusions from media reviews of the Fortuner NeoDrive:

Observation:
At 4:17, the camera pans from a view of a visual signal that is illuminated for all rear seatbelts, to a view of the rear seats, which are empty. However, the audio signal does not activate during driving.
Conclusion: The visual signal activates when any rear seatbelt is not fastened.
Assumption: The Fortuner is not capable of detecting occupants. The audio signal will activate if a belt changes status to unfastened during driving.
